About This Photograph

“Regal”

“…Gracing the skies across all of Alaska with supremacy, the Alaskan Bald Eagle is the ultimate raptor. With remarkable eyesight and talons like razors, these magnificent birds are at the top of the food chain in the avian world. The female Bald Eagle may have a wingspan of 7½-8 feet & reaches maturity in about 5 years. Once listed as endangered, present day numbers worldwide are estimated at 70,000. Approximately half of the world’s population of Bald Eagles lives in Alaska. In British Columbia the estimated population is about 20,000. The combined populaces of Alaska & BC make the northwest coast of North America by far the greatest stronghold for Bald Eagles. The Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve in Southeast Alaska has the world’s largest concentrations of Bald Eagles. Established in 1982 & covering almost 50,000 acres, the Preserve has 200-400 year-round resident birds with as many as 4,000 birds observed through the annual gathering during the autumn salmon runs…”
