About This Photograph
“Puffin Pals”
“…An oddity in the natural world, the Horned Puffin is a pelagic seabird able to dive up to 80 ft. to catch its prey. They can fly between 48 to 55 mph. about 400 beats per minute on those little wings. Its strange triangular orange bill with a red tip becomes smaller in the winter. During summertime puffins will come in from the open ocean to pair up in rocky sea cliffs to lay one egg. Both parents care for the egg, hatch, feed & protect their chick. Once the chick has fledged it will fly out to the open ocean for up to two years. This pair snuggles together on the lichen covered rocks of Round Island Walrus Sanctuary in the powerful and abundant . Horned Puffins are life long mates living 20 or more years..."
