About This Photograph
“Solstice Sunset”
“…Midnight, on the longest day of the year, takes the sun just below the horizon at 62° north latitude. The high clouds continue to be struck by sunlight for almost the entire night before rising again in the dawn. In this golden scene the colors are reflected in the low tide of Cook Inlet looking across to Point McKenzie and beyond to the great peaks of 17,400 ft. Mt. Foraker, 14,573 ft. Mt. Hunter and 20,320 ft. Denali. You can observe a crepuscular ray emanating off to the right of the peak of Mt. Foraker indicating that the sun is still lighting the north side of the peaks and throwing a shadow into the atmosphere. From here the northern hemisphere begins to lose sun…a few seconds every day..."
