Slack-tide-ii

Alaska Aurora Photography

Slack tide smooths Cook Inlet and Knik Arm to a mirror surface, leaving skiffs at anchor in perfect stillness as the silhouette of Sleeping Lady rises in the far distance. A vivid collage of multicolored aurora commands the night sky above, reflected in the calm water below in a scene of rare, quiet grandeur.

About This Photograph

“Slack Tide II”

“… Cook Inlet and Knik Arm are both swept twice a day by the second highest tides in the world. Slack tide turns the waters smooth, leaving the skiffs at anchor motionless. Midway is the dark line of huge bluffs off Point McKenzie and the far away silhouette of Mount Susitna (Sleeping Lady). A beautiful collage of color rises over the curvature of the western horizon as wisps of multicolored aurora command the night sky. Soon the tide shifted, the skiffs swung on anchor and the aurora faded away to show no more …”
