Nature's Blend

Nature's Blend

Alaska Aurora Photography

After weeks of sub-zero temperatures and ice fog, a quarter moon and powerful aurora combine to light the frost-covered river delta in competing hues of silver and green. The aurora had already danced across Alaska earlier that evening before returning in an even grander display, leaving no surface untouched by its luminous reach.

About This Photograph

“Nature’s Blend”

“…After weeks of windless sub-zero temperatures in mid-November, open leads in the river allowed ice fog to form and paint the ground and brush with thick hoarfrost. Although a quarter-moon lies low in the southwest, most of the land is lit by the powerful aurora returning to Alaska from beyond the curvature of the earth. Earlier this aurora danced over Alaskan skies right after dusk twilight, pushing equator-wards immediately and vanishing for over 7 hours. As the star clusters of the Pleiades, Hyades and Orion constellations reach their peaks in the southern night, rare red and white aurora mix across the starfields, above the Chugach Mountains. A perfect collection of Nature’s blend…”
