For several hours the great displays enveloped our earth, at times extending equator-wards with vast expanses of light, from Georgia, Louisiana to as far south as Mexico. The pre-dawn hours had the horizons filled with curtains and rayed structures, swaying across the starfields over the western Chugach Mountains. The unique show suddenly disappeared, becoming void of aurora, leaving behind multitudes of stars amid the blue sweet light of dawn. It seemed impossible for such a grand display to have ended so abruptly.

As the eastern starfields began vanishing by the advance of the rising sun, a subtle flicker of blue-white aurora faded in and out of view to the south, eventually stretching itself into one huge shaft of light standing 400 miles above the earth. From this it expanded across 6,398 foot Pioneer Peak and Twin Peaks with breathtaking brilliance and exploded into the rarest pink aurora without warning. Lasting mere seconds, the great pink aurora intensified, becoming very vibrant with massive beams, crossing the sky at immeasurable speeds. Then, as suddenly as it had appeared, the rare scene relinquished itself to its very creator, the rising sun.

*Personal note* - This auroral event was the largest recorded in scientific history. Instruments used to monitor space storms and geomagnetic disturbances were saturated beyond their high-end capacities to the highest event levels ever recorded. Data derived from this event was only a “best guess” by the scientific community because these levels had never been experienced. The solar flare responsible for this aurora was decided as an “X15 Bright” and knocked out power to six million folks in Ottawa, Canada. Radio communications across the world were also disrupted for several days. In the “aurora-chasing” world, the Great Pink Aurora was the very rarest of the color spectrum ever captured on film. Having chased aurora displays across Alaska since 1980, I’ve yet to see any auroral display even remotely close to the power and beauty of the Great Pink Aurora.

(Dave Parkhurst/Alaska Naturally, Incorporated)

The Aurora Collection™

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0816/3691/7473/files/great-pink-tower-i_d2c9f7ab-6839-44b0-9840-a85ba55eae13.jpg?v=1772618057
